Legal Career Growth: Should You Stay or Should You Go?

Question:

I've been with the same law firm for two years and in the same role since I started. While I enjoy my work and colleagues, I'm debating whether seeking a position at another firm could accelerate my career more than staying put. Any advice?

Answer:

The dilemma of whether to stay at your current job or seek new opportunities elsewhere is a common one, especially when you feel you’re approaching a crossroads in your career. Being proactive about your career growth is commendable; however, frequent job hopping can raise concerns for future employers, potentially marking you as a less stable candidate. Before making any decisions, it's wise to "look before you leap."

Consider addressing any underlying issues you may have with your current role. Is it the projects you’re assigned, team dynamics or growth opportunities you’re questioning? Sometimes, the grass seems greener on the other side because we haven't fully explored our current pasture. Investigate whether other roles, teams or departments within your current firm could improve the areas you’re unsure about. Evaluate whether you’d need to develop new skills or gain expertise in a specific practice area to move to another group in your firm.

Seek advice from trusted sources before making any moves. A conversation with a mentor, family member or career advisor can help you weigh the pros and cons of staying versus leaving. They might highlight aspects you hadn't considered or offer strategies for negotiating a better position within your firm.

Get help from the talent experts

If you find you’ll need to change employers to get what you seek, partnering with a reputable talent solutions firm can offer numerous advantages than charging out on your own. The best of these firms provide exclusive access to unadvertised opportunities, specialist advice from recruitment experts and a guided process throughout your job search. They can help you navigate the complexities of the job market, ensuring you're matched with roles that align with your skills, experience and career aspirations.

While exploring new opportunities is a healthy part of career growth, make sure you've fully assessed your current situation and growth potential within your firm. Sometimes, the best path forward might be where you are, with a little bit of initiative and strategic planning. Of course, charting a new path may turn out to be the best plan for you.
