Welcome from ALA's New Orleans Chapter!

On behalf of the ALA New Orleans Chapter, we are thrilled to welcome you to our city!

We hope you enjoy your time in New Orleans – whether you’re exploring the French Quarter, enjoying some incredible food and music, or connecting with fellow legal administrators.

We’ve put together a little NOLA Welcome Package to help you celebrate your time in New Orleans. Inside, you’ll find a few New Orleans-themed goodies—some tasty treats and some practical items, all chosen to give you a little taste of the spirit of the city. Below is a little history of the items that are included.

  1. Cup
The Mardi Gras plastic throw cup tradition began in 1980 when local businessman Corrado Giacona II introduced custom-imprinted plastic cups as parade throws for krewes like Bacchus and Alla. These reusable souvenir cups quickly became staple catches, prized for holding drinks during Carnival and filling local kitchen cabinets year-round.

  2. Zapp’s Potato Chips
Zapp's began in 1985 in Gramercy, Louisiana, born from a desire to create a potato chip unlike any other. While many chips at the time focused on traditional flavors, Zapp's dared to be different. We embraced the rich, vibrant culinary heritage of our home state, infusing our chips with the robust, spicy, and unforgettable tastes that define Louisiana cuisine. From our iconic Spicy Cajun Crawtators to the tangy Voodoo flavor, each Zapp's chip is a testament to our commitment to innovation and flavor exploration.

Our unique kettle-cooking process is at the heart of every Zapp's chip. This slow, deliberate method ensures a thicker, crunchier chip that stands up to our powerful seasonings, delivering an intensely satisfying experience. It's a method that takes more time and care, but for Zapp's, compromise on quality and flavor is simply not an option. This dedication to craft and a fearless approach to flavor quickly garnered Zapp's a cult following, turning a regional favorite into a national sensation loved by snack enthusiasts everywhere.

  3. Praline
The original praline was roughly a sweet confection made of almonds and some sort of creamy sugary caramelized coating. The candy was named praslin, after the owner of the kitchen in France.

It is believed that pralines were brought over from France by the Ursuline nuns, who came to New Orleans in 1727.  Almonds being in short supply, cooks began substituting the nuts of the native Louisiana pecan trees, and the forefathers of our modern pecan pralines were born. The praline became a sugary, creamy, pecan-laden candy.

  4. Beads
During the late 1800s, inexpensive necklaces made of glass beads began to be tossed into the crowds by the parade krewes. The beads were an instant hit among the crowds of New Orleans residents and visiting Mardi Gras tourists.

Today’s beads are made with cheaper and safer materials like plastic and aluminum rather than glass. Traditional Mardi Gras beads are purple, green, and gold colors. The purple symbolizes justice; the green represents faith, and the gold signifies power.

  5. Koozie
In New Orleans, a koozie is essential because the city's intense humidity causes condensation to form rapidly on cold cans.

Thank you for joining us, and we hope your conference is filled with great ideas, new connections, and a little NOLA fun!

Laissez les bons temps rouler!
