My job title is office administrator, and I am proud to say I am also a Certified Legal Manager (CLM)®. Like many legal administrators, I wondered: Why pursue another certification? What would it add if I already had years of experience? Would it really make a difference?

Those were the questions I wrestled with. What I discovered is that the CLM journey wasn’t just about earning a set of letters after my name. It was about becoming a leader in my profession.

Asking the Big Question: Why CLM?

For a long time, I told myself I was “too busy” or “already qualified.” I have an advanced degree and over a decade of experience managing law firms. Did I really need another credential?

But one day, it hit me: While I excelled at keeping the day-to-day operations running smoothly, I wasn’t fully stepping into my potential when it came to shaping broader strategic decisions. I had valuable insights to offer — I just hadn’t been voicing them as strongly or as often as I should.

That’s when I decided to take the leap and begin the journey to CLM.

What the CLM Really Means

The Certified Legal Manager designation offered by ALA is unlike any other credential I have seen. It’s not about checking boxes, it’s about mastering the full spectrum of legal management.

Preparing for the exam required me to dive deep into all areas of legal management: financial forecasting, HR compliance, operations and legal industry trends. It was rigorous, demanding and exactly what I needed.

As I studied, a new confidence emerged. I realized I wasn’t “just” an administrator; I was a strategic leader with the insight and influence to drive decisions rather than merely execute them.

The Growth Along the Way

What surprised me most was that the real value of the CLM wasn’t just in passing the exam. It was in the journey itself.

Every late night of studying, every practice test, every educational session built my knowledge and my confidence. I was learning how to solve complex problems, use data to make decisions and lead with clarity.

Even before I earned the credential, I noticed changes in my daily work. I was contributing more boldly to discussions, and I was guiding decisions with greater confidence.

A Community that Carried Me

I couldn’t have done it alone. One of the most rewarding parts of the CLM journey was the community.

Through my ALA chapter, I was able to gain most of my educational requirements needed to sit for the exam. There were four of us that year who sat for the exam. We encouraged each other, shared resources and celebrated every milestone together. Some of those colleagues have become lifelong friends.

At conferences, I saw how CLMs were recognized and celebrated, and it fueled my determination. This wasn’t just about personal achievement, but it was about joining a community of professionals who were elevating the entire field of legal management.

What Changed After CLM

Passing the exam was one of the proudest moments of my career. Not because it was easy but because it was hard. The rigor of the process is what makes the CLM so respected.

The CLM validated not only my skills, but also my dedication to excellence and continuous learning. It showed my firm, and myself, that I had mastered the complexities of legal management.

Why I Would Do It Again

Looking back, I realize the CLM was never just about a credential. It was about a commitment to excellence. It was about proving to myself that I could grow, stretch and lead at the highest level.

Today, I mentor and speak with others considering the CLM. I tell them: Yes, it’s hard. Yes, it’s demanding. But that’s what makes it life-changing and worth it.

For me, the CLM opened doors, built confidence and gave me a seat at the table. More than that, it connected me to a community of professionals who are just as passionate about advancing this profession as I am.

So, if you’re considering the journey, my advice is simple: Just take the test!

The question isn’t, “Why pursue the CLM?” It’s, “Why not?”

That’s why I took the journey. And that’s why I encourage you to take it too.
