Becoming certified in Adult Mental Health First Aid will give you the knowledge to strengthen the overall mental health within your firm. Gain practical tools to increase your confidence in providing help to others.

Adult Mental Health First Aid provides a three-year certification by the National Council on Mental Wellness*. This training is included on the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices.

* Please note that the MHFA Certification must be renewed every three years.

What Will I Learn During The AMHFA Course?

Taking place on Sunday, May 7, from 8 a.m.–4 p.m., Adult Mental Health First Aid is an early intervention, evidence-based, public education program that teaches people to identify, understand and respond to signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges.

Participants will gain the tools necessary to respond to those in need using the five-step Mental Health First Aid Action Plan:

  • Assess for risk of suicide or harm.
  • Listen nonjudgmentally.
  • Give reassurance and information.
  • Encourage appropriate professional help.
  • Encourage self-help and other support strategies.

Objectives:

  • Recognize the potential risk factors and warning signs for a range of mental health problems, including depression, anxiety/trauma, psychosis and psychotic disorders, substance use disorders, and self-injury.
  • Interpret the prevalence of various mental health disorders in the United States and the need for reduced negative attitudes in their communities.
  • Apply knowledge of the appropriate professional, peer, social and self-help resources available to help someone with a mental health problem treat and manage the problem and achieve recovery.

  • Provide an overview of the course.
  • Describe the purpose of Mental Health First Aid and the role of the Mental Health First Aider.

Mental Health and Mental Disorders

  • Identify the impact of mental health challenges on the wellbeing of adults in the United States.
  • Explain that recovery from a mental health challenge is possible.

Role of the Mental Health First Aider and Self-Care

  • Describe the purpose of Mental Health First Aid and the role of the Mental Health First Aider.
  • Identify the importance of self-care.

Common Mental Disorders in the United States

  • Increase awareness of common mental disorders in the United States.
  • Review the scope and role of a Mental Health First Aider.

Recognizing Signs and Symptoms

  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health challenges that may impact adults.

ALGEE: Mental Health First Aid Action Plan

  • Learn the five steps of the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan (ALGEE).

MHFA for Early Signs and Symptoms

  • Learn the impact of early intervention on mental health challenges.
  • Apply the appropriate steps of the MHFA Action Plan (ALGEE) when a person shows early signs of a mental health challenge.

MHFA for Worsening Signs and Symptoms

  • Apply the appropriate steps of the MHFA Action Plan (ALGEE) when a person shows worsening signs of a mental health challenge.

MHFA for Crisis Situations

  • Apply the appropriate steps of the MHFA Action Plan (ALGEE) in crisis situations.

Self-Care for the Mental Health First Aider

  • Learn how to choose appropriate methods for self-care following the application of Mental Health First Aid in a crisis or noncrisis situation.

Beneath The Brave

Erin Callinan, MSW, is a nationally recognized author, trainer and speaker with 14 years of executive leadership experience in the field of mental health, domestic violence and sexual assault. She is the Founder of Beneath The Brave, whose mission is to amplify workplaces, careers and lives by strengthening mental health. In 2013, she authored and published her book, Beautifully Bipolar: An Inspiring Look Into Mental Illness and began her career in mental health advocacy and motivational speaking. Callinan holds a Master of Social Work from Arizona State University and is a Nationally Certified Adult Mental Health First Aid Instructor. She is President of the Board at MIKID, a youth serving organization in Arizona for children and teens living with mental health conditions.
