Ahead of the Curve

June 2022

PURPOSE

The Professional Development Advisory Committee’s (PDAC) purpose in providing you this communication is to further its goal of periodically sharing topical information regarding the legal industry. Our hope is that one or more of the updates will provide a spark of insight to assist with your work on behalf of ALA as well as within your firm or legal department.

“DON’T LET PERFECTION BE THE ENEMY OF PRODUCTIVITY”

Source: Alice Boyes, Harvard Business Review

In brief: “Perfectionism is often driven by striving for excellence, but it can be self-sabotaging. There are three big mistakes that tend to kill perfectionists’ productivity. First, they are often unable to designate any decision as unimportant which prevents them from quick action or delegation. Second, they feel morally obligated to overdeliver. Third, they rigidly cling to habits that might no longer be serving them. Awareness is the first step in overcoming these problems.”

PDAC says: “I think a lot of people in our roles probably struggle with this from time-to-time because, well ... we’re perfectionists!”

“THE CASE FOR LEGAL AI (ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE)”

Source: Wendall Jisa, Business Law Today

In brief: “Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are reshaping the way the legal industry operates. They are shifting focus from time-consuming and expensive workflows to efficient investigation of data and proactive ways to prevent emerging problems from spreading. More generally, use of AI is making legal services more accessible and providing lawyers with more powerful tools to find evidence and resolve cases in a fair and comprehensive way.”

PDAC says: “It seems AI and things like the Metaverse will continue to be important topics in the legal industry.”

“WHO IS GENERATION Z?”

Source: Daniel LeDuc, PEW

In brief: “Well, Millennials couldn’t be the youngest generation forever, right? There’s been plenty researched about that group — poised to soon become the largest generation of Americans, making its presence felt in society, politics, and the workplace. But like their older predecessors, Millennials are becoming more established and defined — the oldest of them turn 38 this year — so they now can start looking over their shoulders at who’s coming next.”

PDAC says: “An interesting read. Maybe not too surprising but certainly some great data references.”

“QUANTUM COMPUTERS COULD CHANGE THE WORLD — PROVIDED THEY CAN WORK”

Source: Bryan Walsh, Vox

In brief: “So quantum computers could theoretically solve problems that a classic computer, no matter how powerful, never could. What kind of problems? How about the fundamental nature of material reality, which, after all, ultimately runs on quantum mechanics, not classical mechanics? ... Quantum computers could simulate the properties of a theoretical battery to help design one that is far more efficient and powerful than today’s versions. They could untangle complex logistical problems, discover optimal delivery routes, or enhance forecasts for climate science.”

PDAC says: “I love this stuff! It is so relevant to the legal world. If you want to learn how quantum computers work, check this out.”

“ADDRESSING BEHAVIORAL ISSUES TO RETAIN TOP TALENT”

Source: Dr. Larry Richard, Thomson Reuters

In brief: “As the post-pandemic environment evolves into a one of robust competition to hire and retain the best legal talent (amid skyrocketing compensation costs), it’s little wonder that law firm leaders are focusing more attention on what they can do to get their people back to the office, increase their lawyers’ engagement and thereby reduce attrition; and hire more lawyers and increase the odds that those new hires will stay at the firm.”

PDAC says: “This is a summary of a new white paper by Dr. Larry Richard on how to create an engaged workforce in this post-pandemic environment.”
