The Smithsonian Institution is the world's largest museum, education, and research complex featuring the very popular National Museum of African American History and Culture, which opened in September 2016. Since this museum is new, tickets are required for entry. These tickets are complimentary and ALA has secured passes for Wednesday, May 2 (entry times every 15 minutes between 10 a.m.–3:15 p.m.) or Sunday, May 6 (entry times 10 a.m.–1:15 p.m.). The museum is open daily 10 a.m.–5:30 p.m.
To reserve your ticket (and yes, we have enough for your guests!) please email to [email protected] with Smithsonian Tickets in the subject line and indicate in the email your name, the day you prefer (Wednesday or Sunday) and the time(s) you will be available to enter the museum. We’ll email a confirmation to you and add your museum tickets to your Conference registration envelope.
ALA researched transportation to the Smithsonian Institution and the most cost-effective options include Uber rides - one way to the museum runs approximately $20-25 for Uber X; more for an Uber XL to get a mini-van or large SUV. A taxi is $30 - $40 depending on traffic. There is also a $30 shuttle available by calling (301) 830-2594 or stopping by the Gaylord Transportation Desk to pre-arrange.
