Thursday, September 15, 2016, 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM

The law department is part of the larger corporation. Sometimes this can be limiting. However, there are ways to take control and lead with influence. Participants will get inspired by strategies to increase legal department influence and leadership, and expand collaboration across departments, including how to integrate with finance, treasury and other departments. We'll also discuss strategies for creating visibility for the value we bring to the organization. We'll address process improvement and how leading an effective process improvement effort can advance the goals of the department. We'll answer how collaborative strategies lead to effective influence, better results and more fulfilling experiences. Additionally, we'll offer perspectives on cost control and strategies for maximizing relationships with outside counsel.

Process Improvement for Leaders

Thursday, September 15, 2016, 10:15 AM - 11:45 AM

Efficiency. Value. Predictability. Consistency. Quality. They're all key components of process improvement. Whether you are new to leadership or very experienced, you are responsible for ensuring that your legal department uses excellent processes so that things run smoothly. With ever increasing, additional pressure to manage external resources, it isn't enough for your organization to be efficient: now, you must also find ways to collaborate with preferred providers to create optimized processes.

The goal of this program is to help leaders explore ways to galvanize, inspire, and enable people to both think and perform differently. By using the methodologies and tools of process improvement, we can convince everyone to change and motivate them to improve. As such, process improvement isn't really just about changing processes; it fundamentally is about change management, since it affects the way that people do and deliver their work, individually and collaboratively.

Objectives

Explore how to develop strategies and tactics to align and empower people, manage change, and create and foster a culture of continuous improvement

Find out how to select and prioritize initiatives by looking at the resources, tools, and frameworks of process improvement through a leadership lens

Learn how to get out of the "fire-fighting doom loop" with quick fixes and immediate improvements that require no data

Get new ideas for how to approach improvements with a wider scope, including organizational development considerations

Audience: This session assumes that participants have 10 years of experience and/or advanced degree in field of study

Document Management Trends: A Source of Efficiency for Corporate Legal and Risk Leadership

Thursday, September 15, 2016, 1:15 PM - 2:45 PM

Documents are not just documents anymore. Social media, messaging, voice and video use are increasing. As a result, emails and documents continue to be the medium by which the most critical and sensitive information is created, conveyed and stored. One conservative estimate places organization information growth at 55 percent year-over-year. As a result, the once simple concept of document management is expanding. New tools seek to enhance not just a department's document management, but also knowledge management and process flows. The goal of this session is to help participants identify their departments' document management needs, introduce the various solutions available, and arm them with strategies for managing the solution selection, implementation and change management processes.

Objectives:

Identify the most common, current best practices for document management.

Discuss with peers the critical factors to be considered when evaluating and selecting a document management solution.

Examine some of the merits and drawbacks of emerging document management technologies/solutions.

Outline strategies for guiding change management and ensuring user adoption.

Audience Statement

This session assumes that participants have a working knowledge of technology required in a corporate legal environment.

Technology in the Legal Department CLM

Thursday, September 15, 2016, 3:15 PM - 4:30 PM

"Do more with less" is a common mantra in corporate legal departments, and technology is a key ingredient to achieving this. Legal technology solutions are generally unique, used by relatively small groups within your organization. They also bring high risks. For these reasons, a tremendously effective and collaborative relationship is required with your corporate IT department. Whether it is your e-discovery tools, the electronic billing application or document and matter management, these systems have become integral parts of your legal departments and users have low tolerance for failure or security concerns. You have made a significant investment in these tools, and it's likely your job to leverage it.

Objectives:

Assess the suite of technology applications that is right for your organization.

Identify how to make smart decisions and reduce the risk of over- or under-investing in technology.

Discuss with peers how to make collaboration work for you in technology decisions.

Examine what is in the future and what is just around the corner.

Audience: This session assumes that participants have a working knowledge of technology requirements in a corporate legal environment.

Benchmarking Leading Practices for Operations Leaders: Strategies for Promoting Leadership and Innovation CLM

Friday, September 16, 2016, 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM

Because each of us works in a rapidly changing legal services marketplace, our legal teams – and those with whom we collaborate – must adapt to new ways of thinking and delivering results for our clients. In this session, we'll discuss how other departments and legal service providers are re-engineering their approach to data and tech, how they are rethinking their staffing and competency models, and how they are approaching value, cost, price and fee structures. We'll also cover a range of department efforts to encourage in-house teams to not only change their traditional service models and behaviors, but also instill a new spirit of leadership to advance the company's business goals.

Objectives:

Identify and prioritize both challenges to and ideas that promote law department leadership.

Outline practices and strategies that drive innovation in service delivery and promote behavior change and collaboration between change-resistant lawyers, vendors and staff.

Discuss and share ideas with peers facing similar challenges, allowing participants to take home a list of implementable practices.

Audience: This session assumes that participants have a working knowledge of Corporate Legal Department structures.
