ALA’s Essentials of Chapter Leadership

In October of last year, we asked for feedback from Chapter Presidents regarding chapter leader training opportunities in 2021 through a brief survey. Survey questions focused on the likelihood of the chapter sending representatives to the Chapter Leadership Institute (to be held in-person July 16–17 in St. Louis, MO) and gauged the chapter’s interest in participating in an additional virtual training session that would focus on the fundamentals of chapter management. Based on the survey results, the overwhelming majority indicated an interest in participating in CLI or virtual training, with over half of ALA chapters expressing interest in attending both. With that in mind, we have created ALA’s Essentials of Chapter Leadership.

ALA's Essentials of Chapter Leadership is a new three-day virtual training event intended to provide incoming chapter leaders with basic instruction on chapter management, as well as information on the importance of adhering to essential financial and legal responsibilities. 

Essentials of Chapter Leadership will take place Monday, March 15, through Wednesday, March 17. Two sessions will be held each day, the first at 10 a.m. Central and the second at 2 p.m. Central.

The cost to participate in this virtual event is $499 per chapter. This registration fee grants unlimited access to all members of your chapter interested in attending. Participating chapters will be provided with a unique promo code and registration link to distribute among their members so that they may register themselves for no additional cost. 

How does it work? 
Chapters are asked to designate a primary point of contact for this event. This is the individual who headquarters staff will reach out to if there are any questions regarding the chapter’s registration. Once you have identified that individual, they simply need to submit the chapter registration form. 

Staff will reach out within two business days of receipt of the completed form to provide an invoice for the chapter’s $499 fee, along with additional instructions that should be passed along to individual chapter attendees. 

Individual registration is required to receive access information for the event. Individual attendees from your chapter must register themselves by 5 p.m. Central on Thursday, March 11. Individuals who do not register themselves by the deadline will be unable to access the platform.

Prompt payment of the invoice is expected and can be provided by calling 847-267-1252 for payment by credit card or mailing a check to the P.O. Box on the invoice.

Note: Only one registration form per chapter is needed, so please coordinate submission with your fellow chapter leaders.

The ALA Board of Directors understands that each chapter’s financial situation is different. Therefore, it set aside funds to support those chapters who need assistance with the cost and will consider funding applications based on financial need.
