Share How Your Organization Measures Diversity Success
The Institute for Inclusion in the Legal Profession (IILP), working with ALA, has created an online survey to determine the legal profession's short- and long-term diversity and inclusion goals and objectives. All members of the legal profession are encouraged to participate in the survey, The Measure of Success, which will remain open until March 15.
ALA Member Needs Survey Results

An Update from the Committee on Diversity and Inclusion
A short eight weeks from now we'll be meeting at the 2013 ALA Annual Conference during the early days of spring. As we introduced in our last update, the ALA Committee on Diversity and Inclusion is hard at work on an initiative being introduced at Conference. Our goal is to define how ALA can encourage our members, firms and corporations to affirm their commitments to diversity, and provide a roadmap to support your efforts toward advancing diversity and inclusion. We are working toward transformational change.
The work of our Committee is built around four key ways to drive change and assess progress towards fostering diversity and inclusion: 1) ensuring a "seat at the table" for ALA at discussions about diversity and inclusion in the legal profession and increasing our visibility within the broader industry; 2) providing a mechanism to help attorneys better appreciate how professional administrators can support their firm's diversity initiatives; 3) developing a framework for a model law firm diversity program; and 4) beginning the process of scaffolding ALA's diversity education on a solid and sure foundation.
For those who are attending the 2013 Annual Conference in National Harbor, we invite you to join the members of the Committee and a distinguished panel of diversity champions from both law firms and ALA chapters as they share the milestones of their journey towards creating diverse and inclusive environments. At this session, we will put forth a challenge — in our roles within law firms and legal departments as well as our roles within chapters — to assess your progress, celebrate each step (whether great or small) and identify the next steps as we aim to help you drive change within your organizations.
When you're filling out session preference forms for Conference, we encourage you to plan to attend "Diversity & Inclusion Leadership: Are You Ready?" on Tuesday, April 16 at 2:30 p.m. We promise a lively and engaging discussion and a fresh way to provide a focus to your work in this important area. As the seasons change from winter to spring, we celebrate the work we all do each day to bring change to our workplaces. The ALA Committee on Diversity & Inclusion has many resources available to support you both in-person at the Conference and on the ALA website. We hope to see you there as we share our excitement and introduce our new initiative.
Feel free to reach out to any member of the Committee on Diversity & Inclusion, and we'll see you in April!
