Hurricane Relief Brings Together the ALA Community

  • Sep 5

Flooding and storm damage from Hurricane Harvey have devastated Houston and the surrounding areas. Locals — including ALA members — will need a lot of assistance to recover. To help, the Boston Chapter took the initiative just two days after the storm made landfall to issue a disaster-relief challenge to other chapters: They would donate $5 per chapter member to the Red Cross. Would other chapters do the same?

The following days showed the true strength and cooperative spirit of the Association, as members donated individually and chapters collectively. The Austin Chapter organized a CrowdRise page, and the New Orleans Chapter set up a GoFundMe page specifically to help Houston Chapter members affected by the storm.

As of September 5, the ALA community has pledged to donate tens of thousands of dollars to the Red Cross and other organizations. We've thanked participating chapters we're aware of in the list below; if we missed your chapter's contributions, please let us know so we can highlight your generosity in the future.

Our deepest appreciation to Boston for kicking off this initiative, and thanks to all members and chapters that have risen to the challenge! If you'd like to support the effort, encourage your own ALA chapter to make donations per member, or help as an individual by visiting the Red Cross website or texting HARVEY to 90999 to donate $10 to its relief fund. (The New York Times has an excellent list of other charities to support.)
