Summary

More than 90 administrators attended ALA’s Intellectual Property Retreat held October 11-12, 2007, at the L’Enfant Plaza Hotel in Washington, D.C.

Thursday, October 11, 2007, opened with welcoming remarks from Robert Houle, Chairman of the ALA IP Planning Committee. Educational sessions covered “Generations at Work,” “Weathering the Storm: Digital Disaster Recovery,” and “Solutions to Your Firm’s Risk Insurance Needs.” After lunch, John Michalik, ALA Executive Director, provided an overview of ALA’s current and future plans, as well as goals and objectives.

Thursday afternoon featured a U.S. Patent & Trademark Office update followed by a tour of the USPTO in Arlington, Virginia. The tour was followed by an IP Retreat Exclusive Dinner sponsored by Ruesch International, based in Washington, D.C. In addition, on Thursday evening many IP Retreat attendees participated in a tour of Washington, D.C. at night.

Friday morning, October 12, 2007, began with a session presented by Michael Nash, Nash Consulting, Inc., on “Creating Trust and Respect in the Workplace.” This interactive workshop explored the four spectrums of human behavior and how these styles of behavior can increase trust, respect and morale in the workplace.

Friday educational sessions included “Records Management from an IP Perspective” and “Outsourcing in the U.S.—Why You Don’t Need to Go Overseas.” The day ended with an Idea Exchange which allowed IP administrators to network and discuss current issues, share information, and take back workable strategies.
