Essential Competencies for Legal
Administrators (ECLA)


Education Credit

  • CLM Credit:
    This program provides CLM credit for initial applicants who are principal administrators or functional specialists. While this is not a preparatory course for the CLM examination; ECLA completion counts toward the required professional development study hours for CLM eligibility.

    Credit will be given for:

    • 120 minutes of Interpersonal Relations
    • 120 minutes of Leadership
    • 60 minutes of Conflict Management

    For functional Specialists who need an additional 15 hours of coursework outside of their specialty area, participants may also claim:

    • 4.5 hours in Finance
    • 3 hours of Legal Industry
    • 5 in Human Resources (subtract from the 5 hours, the hours used from above to fulfill general requirements in Interpersonal or Conflict)
    • 4 hours in Office Operations

  • Advanced Degree Credit Hours:
    This program is also eligible for partial credit toward either the Master of Science in Legal Administration degree or the Diplomate in Legal Administration through the University of Denver College of Law.   • Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Credit:

    The Association of Legal Administrators is registered with the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) as a sponsor of continuing professional education on the National Registry of CPE Sponsors. State boards of accountancy have final authority on the acceptance of individual courses for CPE credit. Complaints regarding registered sponsors may be addressed to:

    This program is eligible for a maximum of 22 hours of CPE credit.

    CPE Fields of Study:
    NASBA approves CPE credit for accountants in twenty-three subject matter areas representing the primary knowledge and skill areas needed by accounting licensees to perform professional services: Accounting, Accounting (Governmental), Auditing, Auditing (Governmental), Administrative Practice, Social Environment of Business, Regulatory Ethics, Business Law, Business Management and Organization, Finance, Management Advisory Services, Marketing, Behavioral Ethics, Communications, Personal Development, Personnel/HR, Computer Science, Economics, Mathematics, Production, Specialized Knowledge and Applications, Statistics, and Taxes.

    The fields of study covered in this program include: Business Management and Organization; Finance; Personnel/HR; Specialized Knowledge and Applications; and Personal Development. The sessions to which these fields of study apply are identified on the Course Outline Page of this brochure.

    CPE Codes and Descriptions:
    All CPE eligible courses within this program are at the basic level of instruction. Instructors use rich discussion and analysis processes to cover the essential skills required for effective job performance as a legal administrator. No advance preparation is necessary.
