Meeting the Experience and Employment qualifications is your first step toward achieving certification.
First, determine whether you are a Principal Administrator, or a Functional Specialist (i.e. HR Manager, Finance Manager, etc.). All CLM candidates must fall under one of these two categories at the time of application or have been working in such full-time employment within 24 months from the date of their application:
- Principal Administrator - Job Description and Experience Requirements
- Functional Specialist - Job Description and Experience Requirements
Second, you must be currently involved in the full time work of managing a legal organization, such as a private law firm, legal clinic, governmental agency, corporate legal department, or court system, or have been working in such full-time employment within 24 months of the date of application.
The application process is the first step towards achieving your certification, an achievement that will provide you with the knowledge and skills to confidently walk into any mid-size firm and hit the ground running.
Education Requirements for ALL Applicants
All candidates must complete, within the 24 months preceding the date of application, at least 2 hours of course work in each of the five (5) Management Categories.
Course work may be completed in any of the competencies or combination of competencies that comprise the category. A maximum of four (4) hours can be obtained in an interactive technology-based self-study program.
Review the guide "How to Determine What Education Qualifies for CLMsm Credit" for comprehensive instructions on how to determine what education qualifies for CLM credit.
Additional Education Requirements for Functional Specialists
In addition to the total of 10 hours of educational coursework required of all CLM applicants in the five Management Categories above, candidates who are functional specialists must also provide evidence of having completed, over the 24 months preceding the date of application, an additional 15 hours of educational course work distributed in subject areas other than the field in which the functional specialist is primarily employed.
