Today at the Conference
Photo Gallery
On the last day, ALA Annual Conference Chair Martha Bunn Youngblood and 2010 Conference Chair
Scott Dotson, CLM, conducted a drawing for one member to attend next year’s Annual Conference.
All attendees were eligible who stayed at the Conference hotels, and the winner of the drawing was
Debra Elsbury of Indianapolis Indiana.
And then came the final event. Speaker Liz Murray delivered a motivating and moving speech based
on her story on how she went from being homeless to attending Harvard. Her inspirational message
touched members as she encouraged them to overcome obstacles. "I believe there are ways to break
past the barriers," Murray told the crowd.
Murray’s story was made into a Lifetime movie, From Homeless to Harvard, and her message
during today’s Conference was not only to tell her story, but more importantly, to motivate attendees.
"You have to do your part and put your best foot forward and the universe responds," she said. "Life doesn’t
wait for you."
A meet and greet with Murray was the final event for the ALA Annual Conference and Exposition, where
her words encouraged attendees and even moved them to tears. It reminded me of a point she made in
her speech, "We all have the power to influence others."
We welcome you to join us for next year’s Annual Conference and Exposition in Boston, Massachusetts,
from May 3-6, 2010. Stay tuned for more details, and be sure to visit the photo galleries from this year’s event.
