More than 1,700 legal management professionals from around the world
came to Seattle for ALA’s 2008 Annual Educational Conference and Exposition.
This year’s Conference featured more than 100 educational sessions, a variety of
valuable networking opportunities, and the chance to visit with more than 200
vendors in the ALA Exhibit Hall.
The Conference kicked off on Monday, May 5, with the
Keynote Address,
presented by Steven Sample, Ph.D., president of the University of Southern California. His address
drew a packed audience as he presented a thought-provoking talk on leadership.
Later that evening, ALA leaders honored volunteers and Chapters for their extraordinary
efforts during the past year at the Chapter Awards Reception.
At the Association Luncheon
on Tuesday, May 6, Wendy Rice-Isaacs became ALA’s 34th president as she accepted the gavel from
2007-2008 president Patti Groff, CLM. In addition, Jim Allen, Sabine Curto, Judy Hissong, CLM, and
Tom Ivey, CLM, were installed as new members of ALA Board of Directors. The luncheon ended with
Seattle meteorologist Steve Poole providing a lighthearted discussion of behind-the-scenes secrets to
forecasting.
The Exhibit Hall was full of energy Tuesday evening at the ENCORE Reception: ALA Place Market.
Attendees used this special time to meet, learn and converse with our exhibitors while enjoying the fish throwers
from Pure Food Fish Market and music provided by several local Seattle musicians.
Egil (Bud) Krogh was the featured speaker for the David W. Brezina Memorial Session
on Wednesday, May 7. The former leader of the Nixon White House “Plumbers,” Krogh outlined the path he took from
young lawyer to White House counsel to his infamous role in the Watergate scandal. His message to attendees was to
“preserve their personal integrity at all costs.”
At Wednesday evening’s Grand Finale Event,
attendees, guests, and vendors ventured to the Seattle Center and had the unique opportunity to enjoy special access
to the Space Needle's Skyline Level and Observation Deck, the Experience Music Project, and the Science Fiction Museum.
A dynamic week of education and Conference festivities came to an end on Thursday, May 8, with the energizing
and motivational Closing General Session presented by representatives from Afterburner, a group of fighter
pilots who train leaders to perform and execute more effectively. Attendees were left with an action plan to get team
members aligned with their goals.
If you thought this year’s Conference was full of excitement, we invite you to “Get Jazzed!” at next year’s Annual
Conference in New Orleans, May 18-21. More information will be coming soon.
