CHICAGO, ILLINOIS —The Association of Legal Administrators (ALA) has released the full data analyses of its 2016 Compensation and Benefits Survey and Large Firm Key Staff Compensation Survey. Every year, as law firm staffing becomes even more competitive and firm management becomes more varied, ALA collects current market intelligence and presents its findings to the legal industry.

“It has been interesting to study the trends in this report each year and determine the ‘new normal’ post-recession as the industry continues to evolve,” said Oliver Yandle, Executive Director of the association. “Having this information helps us to better understand the needs of our members and their firms.”

The annual survey reports comparative salary and benefits for 50 individual management positions, legal secretaries/administrative assistants and paralegal/legal assistants. Additionally, it includes billable hour data for attorneys and paralegals. The consolidated results encompass data for 6,397 professionals, with additional hourly wage data for 6,079 legal assistants/paralegals and 12,506 legal secretaries/administrative assistants. In total, the report includes more than 1,000 offices’ questionnaires in its final results.

“This year's report includes extensive data at both the national and local level,” said ALA member Maria Mason, CLM, Chief Operating Officer at Goodsill Anderson Quinn & Stifel. “The annual survey results are invaluable to my firm for planning purposes and for staying competitive in the marketplace.”

The survey for large firms provides a deep dive into C-level compensation at firms with over 100 lawyers; 45 percent of respondents are firms with over 400 lawyers. The full report presents detailed data on base salaries, bonuses, other cash compensation and deferred compensation by firm size, region, state and metropolitan area.

“The demand for this report continues to grow every year as we strive to produce this survey and other resources for law firms to remain competitive,” Yandle said.

Firms who participated in the 2016 surveys receive customizable reports and digital dashboards using their data to benchmark, as well as a savings on the purchase price of the report.
